BY DARCIE STEVENS

This Microwave World
Red States (Tight Spot)

It's all about the bass isn't it? It is for This Microwave World, Austin's premier post-apocalyptic dance quintet. Maybe not all about the bass. Brandon Loe's low end might not be half as fierce without Sean O'Neal's powerful vocals. Red States is TMW's first full-length, although its fourth release, a collection of ideas, revelations, and riots belted out by O'Neal and driven by Kevin Bybee's always-immediate drumming. Opening with the vintage "December Was a Sham," O'Neal instills anxiety and impulse that continues throughout, with pixie keyboardist Erin Mikulenka's backing vocals mocking response. Shouting back to the Eighties with zeal, the Rapturesque "You Are a Riot," Britt Daniel-backed "The Party Line," and organ-driven "She's Insecure" all stand on their own as summer dance party hits. But next to the darkness of "The Year of Living Enviously," "A Model Life," and closer "The Hours," the ass-shakers seem almost trite: crowd-pleasers vs. boundary-pushers. This Microwave World is combustible, both on album and on stage, and while they have a lot of fun with the upbeat numbers, the drug-addled edge of romance shines a lot brighter. That combustion is what makes a great band...and oftentimes breaks it, too.

Look for the record in several magazines and online zines. Here are some reviews already popping up!

This is from the All Ages Zine - Thanks guys.
Classic indie rock here. A good, upbeat disk. Fun to drive to type record. Or something to motivate you to clean the house. One of my more favorite tracks would be She's Insecure. The band reminds me a bit of The International Noise Conspiracy, which is a good thing. These guys will most likely help fill college radio station air waves all summer long.(DH)

Living Underground

After listening to this well produced album several times, I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to stand up and get my groove on next time around. Well maybe not, we'll see. The best genre I can touch on for This Microwave World is...well let's say they have the sound and style of a british pop rock band. Red States has all the key features to this... the catchy and fast upbeats that the drummer creates, the peppy bass melodies, the synth/organ keeping tempo as it surrounds and captures the sound of the guitar riffs, the lyrics being expressed in a poppy style of execution, etc... Maybe that will give you an idea of what I'm dancing to.

I can see this as the album that the band has been craving for and trying to force out of their musical abilities all these years since the creation. In the past, TMW did not even have a drummer, they used a drum machine. Now with this latest CD, they have picked up a real drummer which, in my opinion, completes their sound and makes a much more fuller 'rock' sound. The music that these guys bring to the table is without a doubt in depth. When I listen closely to the music that these guys put out on some of these songs, it amazes me. They have so much going on, and the way the music was put together as a whole is great. The way I see it is, if a band can have this much going on in their music and create such a fluent drive that flows to my ears, that's impressive. This is certainly their best work to date, and I can see this album making TMW's fanbase increase dramatically.

Up For Sale

The Arm's self-titled debut is now up for sale in the releases section, where you can also preview some tracks. The Arm formed as a one-off joke back in 2002 and never really came to the punch line. Comprised of Sean O'Neal (This Microwave World) on vocals and keys, Alex Lyon (Zykos) on guitar, Kevin Bybee (On!Air!Library!/TMW) on drums, and Alex Ramirez (A Tiger Named Lovesick) on bass, the fearsome foursome have been wreaking havoc on stages across the country.
"We're out there to destroy every night," warns O'Neal. "Whenever we play a show, and we have to open for somebody, I think of us as these four ordinary guys that are going to come in off the street and kill your band."
Influenced by late-Seventies stalwarts the Birthday Party and the Fall among others, The Arm fuse the Seventies Punk Aesthetic into a cacophony of ear-splitting guitars, jagged riffs and heavy beats.
The Arm! is their first LP and the band is currently working on a new record with producer, Chris Zane (Les Savy Fav, Inouk, Calla). With an eventful SXSW behind them, these boys will be touring, recording, and fighting pompous Kiwis throughout 2005.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.tightspotrecords.com/2005/04/arm-up-for-sale.html' title='The Arm!
